Twilight Tales

July 2004 Production - A Cut in the Rates
by Alan Ayckbourn

Director: Ashley Dunn

This was a spooky comedy in which a town hall representative, Miss Pickhart pays a visit to Ratchett, a retired illusionist, to try to convince him to pay his rates. He takes her down to the basement to show her some of his magic and she gets a little more than she bargained for when the ghost of Ratchett's wife, Rosalinda appears and pleads with her to help set her free from the torment of being stuck in between the living and the dead. Having convinced Miss Pickhart to lie in the magician's box where she lost her own life Rosalinda disappears and Ratchett goes into a fit of rage at the sight of Miss Pickhart impersonating his wife. He attempts to cut the box in half with Miss Pickhart inside. Finally she escapes and runs screaming down the road and the audience are left in fits of laughter when Ratchett announces to Rosalinda that they'll have do the same again for the gas board tomorrow!

Part of three one-act plays performed. See also After Midnight, Before Dawn and Cards, Cups and Crystal Ball.
